Urdu: Kakri (ککڑی)
Punjabi: Tar (تر)
Sindhi: Vango (وانگو) / Kakri
English: Armenian Cucumber, Snake Melon
Sowing Time: The best time to sow is February to April.
Soil Prep: Prepare soft, loamy soil. Mix DAP and Urea at the time of sowing for vigorous vine growth.
Spacing: Plant seeds 8 inches apart on ridges to allow vines to spread or climb.
Watering: Water every 7 days. Do not let the soil dry out completely during flowering.
Harvesting: Pick the fruits when they are tender and light green (about 12-18 inches long). Delaying harvest can make them thick and seeded.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
Q: What is the difference between Kakri and Cucumber (Khira)? A: Kakri (Snake Melon) is longer, thinner, and has ridges on its skin. It is botanically a melon but tastes like a crispy cucumber.
Q: When is the right time to sow Kakri in Punjab? A: You can start sowing from mid-February when the frost is over, up until April.
Q: Can I grow Tar (Kakri) in pots? A: Yes, but you need a large container (15-18 inches) and a trellis/rope for the vine to climb, otherwise the fruits will curl on the ground.
Q: Is this variety bitter? A: No, the Spring Hybrid F1 is specially bred to be bitter-free and sweet, unlike some older desi varieties.
