Starting BolStar Onions from Seed: An October–November Nursery Guide

Onions ask you to plan ahead. A tray of thin green seedlings in autumn is the beginning of a crop that will occupy its space for months. Getting that nursery stage organised makes the rest of the season easier to manage.

Nursery sowing is the first stage

The October–November window refers to starting seedlings. It is not a promise that you will lift mature onions in those months. Keep the nursery date separate from the later transplanting and harvest dates in your notes.

Use the window alongside local advice and the packet instructions. An onion crop depends on the variety's response to day length as well as temperature. Moving a planting calendar from another country can give poor results even when the seed germinates well.

Prepare the nursery before opening the packet

You can use a prepared nursery bed or suitable seed trays with drainage. Choose a place where you can check moisture easily, rather than a corner you only visit occasionally.

Prepare a fine, even surface and remove large clods. In trays, use an appropriate seed-starting mix. Label the sowing with “BolStar” and the date, especially if another onion variety is nearby.

Think about the eventual planting space too. It is easy to raise more seedlings than the garden can accommodate. Measure the bed first and plan a manageable number rather than sowing the whole 100g pack because it is available.

Sow shallowly and keep the moisture steady

Follow the supplied packet's depth instructions. General onion seed guides commonly use shallow sowing: Utah State University Extension gives about a quarter to half an inch. That is useful general guidance, while the packet remains the reference for your seed.

Spread seed evenly, cover lightly and water with a gentle flow. Avoid a strong stream that moves seeds into piles or exposes them. Check that excess water can drain.

After emergence, give the seedlings light and airflow. A cover used to hold moisture should not remain over growing seedlings without attention. Inspect the nursery regularly so emerging plants do not spend days under a forgotten cover.

Judge readiness by the seedlings

Do not transplant just because a set number of days has passed. Look for healthy, well-established seedlings and suitable conditions in the prepared bed. Cold weather can slow nursery growth, so two trays sown on the same date may develop differently in different places.

If seedlings have been sheltered, introduce them gradually to outdoor conditions before moving them permanently. Prepare the bed first so lifted roots are not left exposed while you search for tools or finish clearing weeds.

Give each plant room in the bed

Separate seedlings gently, settle their roots into the prepared soil and water them in. Avoid forcing a bent root into a tiny hole. Keep the planting labelled after transplanting; nursery labels often get lost when trays are emptied.

Take a photo of the finished row. It provides a useful reference for spacing and makes later gaps easier to notice.

Protect the young crop's growing space

Remove small weeds carefully while the onions establish. Work shallowly near the plants so you do not damage roots. Check moisture in the actual bed; the product page's twelve-day watering interval will not fit every soil, rainfall pattern or container.

Use fertiliser according to the soil's needs and the product label. The names DAP, potash and urea in a listing do not by themselves provide a dose for a home garden.

If leaves show persistent damage, inspect the plant before choosing a treatment. Keep a clear photo and note when the symptoms began. Repeated feeding cannot correct every cause of poor growth.

Plan for a longer crop

BolStar is listed with an approximate five-month crop period. Treat that as a planning estimate, not an exact harvest appointment. Keep the growing space available and watch the bulbs and foliage as they mature.
